WNU WEEKENDS

Our guide to Salcombe

First up in our #staycationseries has to be our founder's hometown.

Location: Salcombe, Devon.

Best season: All year round. (We might be biased…)

Average temperature: 13 degrees in autumn. 19 degrees, midsummer.

Distance from WNU HQ: 216 miles

To sit: On the wall of The Ferry Inn, overlooking the estuary – with something iced or fried.

To day trip: Walk the South West Coastal Path from Bolt Head around to Hope Cove (a nearby seaside village). It almost gives Salcombe a run for its money – almost.

To eat: Fancy sitting quayside, eating handpicked seafood? Head to Crab Shed.

To stay: The Gara Rock Hotel is top of the list. It’s got ocean views from bed, free-standing baths and excellent hot chocolates. Sold.

To do: The beach when the sun’s out. And when it’s not, there’s our lovely store.

To pack: Sailor stripes because…obviously. Then, there’s the seersucker collection, our go-to travel essential. And nothing does layering on blustery British beaches quite like the Devon jumper.

To unwind:
Simple. Don’t leave the beach. Summer days tend to slip into nights. So, you’ll need a big cool box of wine and a barbeque for the sausages. Oh, and some sausages.

To snack:
Doughnuts and Cornish pasties at The Bake House. Pick and mix from Cranch’s. (You can wave goodbye to willpower.)
