Iconic Shirts From

Rom-Com Classics

WNU NOSTALGIA

We love a rom-com. The airport dash. The (inevitable) snog in the rain. The slow smile when they realise they’re in love.

We're obsessed with it all.

But let's be honest, what's the real reason we watch? It's the shirts – of course, it’s the shirts.

Cool, oversized, worn like they just rolled out of someone else’s bed (because they absolutely did). In the 90s, we started stealing them from the boys. Now, we’ve made our own.

The inspiration's right here:

Hugh Grant: Love Actually

Hugh Grant’s rom-com uniform, let’s face it, is always a shirt. In Notting Hill, the loose-fitting shape and rolled-up sleeves dialled up the forlorn lover look.

For Four Weddings and a Funeral, there was that barely buttoned floral number. In Bridget Jones, he went rakish and slim-fit to play our favourite on-screen cad. But in Love Actually, his most buttoned-up look, he proved shirts are anything but stiff. Cue The Pointer Sisters…

Steal Hugh’s style: The Boyfriend: Fine Poplin, White.

ANDIE MACDOWELL: FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL

The eternal dilemma: what do you wear to nervously rattle through all your past lovers with one of your past lovers? Well, if you’re MacDowell, the answer is a blue checked shirt, loosely layered over a white top. (We think she made the right choice.) It’s cool, casual, laid-back – everything you want the conversation to be.

Steal Andie’s style: The Classic: Fine Brushed, Navy Blue Check.

COLIN FIRTH: BRIDGET JONES’S DIARY

All dried off from Pride & Prejudice, Mr Darcy returned to our screens in something more office-appropriate (but still brooding in soft cotton).

Stubbornly elegant and forever the honourable English gent, Firth’s look was all about restraint and reliability. But the second he loosened up at the collar, he made us all swoon.

Steal Colin’s style: The Classic: Oxford, Celeste Blue.

JULIA ROBERTS: THE ENTIRE ARCHIVE

I think we can all agree that in every 90s rom-com, from Pretty Woman to Notting Hill, Julia Roberts owned the boyfriend shirt. There’s no doubt about it. Knotting a classic white in the hotel suite scene. Or throwing on some blue stripes to eat toast in bed. The only question we should be asking is: Hugh Grant’s or Richard Gere’s?

Team Richard Gere: The Boyfriend: Fine Poplin, White in 100% Organic Cotton.

Hugh Grant forever: The Boyfriend Exaggerated Cuff: Fine Poplin, Royal Blue Stripe.

MEG RYAN: WHEN HARRY MET SALLY

Harry: “You should wear skirts more. You look really good in skirts.” No thanks, Harry. We’re all about the shirts – and so is Sally. Styling up tailored fits with big boxy knits, wide-lapelled blazers and tailored trousers, Sally’s the incidental face of the entire WNU collection.

Steal Meg’s style: The Boyfriend: Linen, and Jura Cardigan: Yak, Navy

JUDE LAW: THE HOLIDAY

The quintessential boy next door, Jude’s soft-toned wardrobe always kept his book-editor look from becoming stuffy.

Layered under cashmere jumpers and plaid blazers, he showed us how to make heritage dressing (extremely) sexy.

Steal Jude’s style: The Boyfriend: Fine Poplin, Latte Stripe in 100% Organic Cotton.

Discover The Weekend: TENCEL™ Lyocell in our iconic stripe.
