Here’s how to tuck a shirt (properly)

WNU WEARS

Let’s talk about the tuck.

Yes, stuffing your shirt into your trousers needs airtime. It’s amazing how easy it is to get wrong. But done right, it’s transformational. Like a good haircut or Marmite.

There are two big hitters when it comes to tucking.

There’s the full tuck. This one’s for proper grown-ups – the I’ve-got-my-own-steamer types.

And there’s the French tuck. It’s a little looser. A little cooler. (And it’s not actually French.) Both work. Both are easy.

Both are about 83% of what makes an outfit (we’ve done the calculations).

Here’s how to tuck two ways.

The Shirt

Start with a shirt.

Not just any shirt. The right shirt. Your favourite.

We’ll be using something WNU, obviously (specifically, the Boyfriend: Fine Poplin, White). Button it up as usual and await further instruction.

The Full Tuck

She’s clean. She’s classic. She pays her council tax on time. She’s the tuck for meetings, a first date and sipping negronis at hotel bars.

How to tuck

1. Undo your trousers. (No one panic – it’s just easier.)

2. Tuck the entire hem of your shirt in, starting at the back and working round to the front.

3. Smooth it down so it’s taut against your skin. (We don’t want any weird bunching.)

4. Lift your shoulders. This releases just the right amount of puff at the waistband.

5. Pinch that puff and ease it out for a bit of slouch. Then, repeat at the back.

The French Tuck

She may not be French.

But she’d fool anyone. (She’s pulling off a red lip and a fringe annoyingly well.)

She’s the tuck for Royal Parks and farmer’s markets, followed by some people-watching in cafés.

How to tuck

1. Undo the bottom button on your shirt.

2. Take the buttoned side (important!) and tuck just that panel into the front of your trousers.

3. Leave the rest out.

4. Pinch the tucked panel and pull ever so slightly to loosen the look – et voilà!

Roll The Sleeves (we’d recommended it)

Both looks love a rolled sleeve. It adds enough cool to offset a precision tuck. Here’s how it’s done.

How to roll

1. Unbutton the cuffs.

2. Fold at the seam. (Not too neat.)

3. Keep going until you’re midway between wrist and elbow. (Three thick rolls is usually the magic formula.)
